Space technologies applied to urban planning
This work aims to relate society, space technologies and environment through the case study of
Brazilian environmental issues, oriented by satellite remote sensing.
This study, which started in the Winter School of Space Technologies of 2019 (CIITE 2019) from the
National Institute of Space Research (INPE), integrated the above topics with the 17
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the United Nations.
The use of space technologies, then, was chosen as the method of analysing environmental
problems in five Brazilian cities, representing each country region and their characteristic problems,
in order to explore urban planning in a sustainable and smart way.
Through the use of remote sensing tools and the Geographical Information System (GIS),
it was possible to characterize the cities with respect to their chosen problems, propose
practical solutions of urban planning and develop an Integrated System of Environment and Urban Development (SIMADU)
as a means to unify techniques of urban planning analysis using satellite technology.
